Ryan still has good shot at advancing

If you’re a Ryan Raiders fan trying to plan your Saturday afternoon, let me assure there will be a Game 3 at noon in Coppell against Keller Fossil Ridge.

First of all, Ryan is going to have a decisive edge on the mound in Game 2 with Curtis Petersen going against who will likely be Kyle Estill. Estill is a good ball player, but Petersen is a different animal. That alone, I believe, will keep Ryan’s season going until Saturday.

After that, it’s anyone’s guess. These two teams are very evenly matched, despite what Thursday’s score indicates. Fossil Ridge got five hits with the top five batters in its lineup each getting one. Ryan got six hits with the top six batters in its lineup each getting one.

The Panthers’ power was the difference in Game 1, but nothing through the season indicates they can duplicate that kind of outing again. If they go yard three times against Curtis Petersen I’ll do my post-game interview with Bret Warnack in my undies.

Basically, I think Ryan will have an edge on the mound in Game 3 with either Scotty Young or Michael Braswell or both. Fossil Ridge swept its first two series, so we haven’t seen the Panthers’ No. 3 or No. 4 yet in the playoffs. Young and Braswell have produced in the clutch in the playoffs already.

But the deciding factor could be which team can get something out of the bottom of its lineup. Neither team produced after the six-hole in Game 1.

Guyer Spring Football, Take 2

Last time I went out to spring football, the Guyer offense was lagging pretty far behind the defense, which is usually the case when football gets going.

After my second trip out there today, I have some news to report: The offense has come alive.

It starts with the Wildcats' new man under center, J.W. Walsh. The head coach's son isn't the runner Jake Witt was, but Guyer's passing attack will be more lethal this season with Walsh behind center.

It will definitely take Walsh some time to adjust to the speed of the varsity game since he was leading the Freshman team last year. I suspect that will come sometime very early on in the second game of the season against Stephenville. One thing I noticed about Walsh is that is very calm and cool in his presence although he did get in a bit of a verbal exchange with his papa after making the wrong read on a throw. As a coach's son, it always seems things just come easier having grown up around the game, so it should be interesting to see his maturation this upcoming season.

Also on the offense, Guyer has two spots where experience is plentiful -- the offensive line and at running back. Of course, Kyle Clark is sidelined for the spring with some cartilage damage in his knee, but the Wildcats have their other behemoth at right tackle in Jesse Coffey. At running back, they return two starters from last year in Deandre Wilson and Jaimaine Wilhite. I didn't see Wilson take any snaps today, but Wilhite looked great, and most notably stronger. Last year, in short situations, Wilson was Guyer's man, but Wilhite looked really strong running the ball today.

On the defensive side, Cody Marley was all over the place. The senior-to-be has had a few Division I offers and showed why on the field today. He had one play on a Guyer receiver, who had a nicely placed ball and saw Marley coming out of the corner of his eye and dropped the ball just before Marley lit him up.

With four teams making the playoffs next year (which is a tad bit ridiculous, by the way), I'm not positive Guyer will break through with its first postseason appearance next year, but I can pretty much guarantee they'll be a team to be reckoned with next year, whereas in their previous two seasons they really haven't been. The size is there, the experience is there and after 20 games with just one win, the hunger is bound to be there.

5-4A All-District softball

MVP- Kylee Crosek SO. (Denton Guyer) Misty Dooley FR. (Denton Ryan)

Offensive Player of the Year- Micah Foutch FR. (Denton Ryan)

Defensive Player of the Year- Whitney Haynes SR.. (Denton Ryan)

Pitcher of the Year- Brysten Luster SR. (Denton Ryan)

Catcher of the Year- Caitlin Wester SR. (W.F. Rider)

Newcomer of the Year- Amy Menge SR. (Denton High)

I was glad to see Kylee Crosek get MVP honors as a sophomore. Her numbers were ridiculous this season and what was really amazing about her year was that she never hit a slump -- like not even for a single game. I think she went 0-for once and even in that game she managed to reach base and score. That doesn't even account for her pitching numbers, which ranked near the top in the DFW area in Class 4A. I'd say Dooley's selection was a bit of a surprise, but the freshman put up some dazzling numbers from the leadoff spot.

While Ryan's Brysten Luster struggled toward the end of the year and into the playoffs, she did win a ton of big games in district this year, which definitely made her deserving of pitcher of the year.

A little rumor dispelling

Just in case you've heard that Guyer left tackle Kyle Clark, who committed to Texas Tech, tore his ACL in spring practice and has had surgery, I'm here to tell you it's not true.

As was first reported on this blog, Clark just had a little cartilage damage and he might not even need surgery. If he does, I reckon it'll just be a little scoping to clean things up, which shouldn't force him to miss any time.

He is, for sure, out for the spring, but I get the feeling that's just for precautionary reasons. If it were September and this happened, I think he'd be playing.

A look at Fossil Ridge

Keller Fossil Ridge is very capable of ending Ryan's potential return to the state tournament, and the Panthers begin and end with Brendan Alvey.

The Navarro commit is Fossil Ridge's top pitcher, and has wins in best-of-three series wins over Wichita Falls Rider and Arlington Heights. He has two home runs and a triple in the post season. He pitched Game 1 against Rider and Game 2 against Heights, so we'll have to wait and see if Fossil wants to pit him against Curtis Petersen or not.

The thing that sticks out to me about the Panthers is that they have pitching depth that can rival the Raiders. I think Ryan still gets a slight edge, but Fossil has good options in No. 2 Kyle Estill, who also has two wins in the Panthers' two sweeps. He outlasted TCU signee Walker Kelly in Game 1 against Heights in extra innings.

Fossil Ridge had a team earned-run average of 1.92, so you know Ryan's going to be tested at the plate. If the Raiders can get some base runners, I think they'll win.

Attn: Track fans!

I came across a really cool Web site for those of you who weren't able to make it to Austin last weekend for the UIL state track and field meet. Well, actually, it's just the track part.

Go here to watch every single race in high-quality video and there's also numerous interviews with participants, including Argyle's Blake Woolums and Kristie Krueger.

It's a really good site totally devoted to track.

Baseball gods smiling on Ryan

Ryan got a pair of epic performances in the form of Bubba Roddy's clutch walk-off double and Scotty Young's relief effort, but the Raiders have to feel like they dodged a bullet today against Cleburne.

There were a number of opportunities for the Yellow Jackets to steal Game 3 from Ryan. Don't get me wrong, I think the Raiders are the better team, but Cleburne stepped up and it was ultimately Ryan's pitching depth that won it the series.

Which brings me to my next point. Bret Warnack certainly doesn't need my help, but if it were me, I'd start Young if the Raiders go to a Game 3 against Keller Fossil Ridge. With all due respect to Michael Braswell, Young was simply electric. His heat is too much for lower-order batters.

May 10, 2008

Ryan moves on

Bubba Roddy hit an RBI double in the bottom of the eighth. Keller Fossil Ridge is next.

Still going

Ryan is in the bottom of the eighth with the top of its order coming up. Scotty Young has been dominant and has six strikeouts, more than the other two pitchers in the game combined.

Ryan Salter, Will Nelson and Zach Voight have a chance to send the Raiders to the regional quarterfinals.

Small-town girl about to go big

Bonnie Richardson, out of Rochelle, a town near Brady, the mythical "Heart of Texas", is about to win the 1A girls team title all by her lonesome.

Richardson is about to accomplish a feat that even Detroit Lions receiver Roy Williams wasn't able to pull off for Odessa Permian after she won the 200-meters a few minutes ago. She's now won the 200 and the high jump, finished second in the 100 and the long jump and got third in the discus.

With her amazing performance, she has Rochelle sitting atop the team standings in 1A girls with just the 4x400 relay to go. All of the teams in striking distance of Richardson don't have mile relay teams. Pretty amazing feat, right there.

Tied heading into the seventh

This is probably not something Bret Warnack is thrilled about.

Ryan is tied with Cleburne, 2-2, heading into the seventh inning of Game 3. We're basically in an overtime situation where the next play, or the next mistake, can win the game. Cleburne has had issues with errors all year. We'll see if Ryan can catch a break and move on to face Keller Fossil Ridge.

Scotty Young is taking the mound for the top of the inning. The top of Cleburne's batting order is heading to the plate.

Poor Colby Braddock

Cleburne's catcher took one in the shoulder from Cord Jezek yesterday and gave Jezek a piece of his mind on the way to first base.

Today, Scotty Young took a piece of Braddock's mind by giving him a fast ball to the head. Braddock got the last laugh though as Bif Jones, running for Braddock, scored on a single by first baseman Shane Ingram to tie the game at 2-2.

Heading into the home stretch

Scotty Young and Cleburne right fielder Clayton Skoog kept runners off the board in the fourth inning.

Young came in and looked dominant while getting two quick outs to end the top of the fourth. Skoog made a dazzling throw to home plate after a pop fly to get Colby Boliver at home plate to end the top of the fourth.

Young is on the mound now in the fifth. Ryan leads 2-1.

Scotty Young in the game

With two runners on and just one out in the top of the fourth inning, Bret Warnack is putting flame thrower Scotty Young on the mound.

Young doesn't see a lot of game time in district play, but there is a lot of buzz surrounding the sophomore. He has, as Joey Florence put it, a cannon for an arm. He will likely be Ryan's starting quarterback next year.

Let's see how he does.

Ryan retakes the lead

There is a small-ball sighting in Saginaw.

Ryan has taken a 2-1 lead off another base-running bonanza, and with some help from the Yellow Jackets. Tom Robertson, running for Juan Gloria, scored after Will Nelson reached on an error by Cleburne's third baseman.

We are now in the fourth inning. Braswell is still on the mound.

Raiders weather storm

Ryan just survived its first test of the game, but gave up a run to tie the game 1-1.

Cleburne catcher Colby Braddock hit a no-outs RBI single to tie the game after runners reached on an error and a single. It could have been a lot worse had a Yellow Jacket not gotten caught in no man's land on the third base line and a nice play by catcher Juan Gloria.

Ryan takes early lead

Ryan Salter's base running just gave Ryan a 1-0 lead after the first inning.

He reached base on an error and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Will Nelson. He stole third and came home on a passed ball.

He's an automatic run if he reaches base.

Do or die for Ryan

Ryan's baseball season will over without a stellar effort against Cleburne in Game 3 of the Class 4A Region I area round of the playoffs today in Saginaw. Things are about to get under way here at Saginaw High School, where I have been blessed with an air-conditioned press box.

Here are some notes: Michael Braswell is getting the start on the mound for Ryan -- not a huge surprise. Justin Smithers is getting the start at first base in place of Jordan Buck, who started Game 2. Kevin Burkhart is back in the batting lineup in the nine-hole after being playing just second base in Game 2.

Should be a good one. I'm a predicting a Ryan Raider victory after a slow performance last night.

Live from...my bed

That's right, I beat my 10:30 a.m. wakeup call by about 23 1/2 minutes after a long, hot day at the state track meet yesterday. Fifteen hours in the near-100-degree heat and high humidity will take a lot out of you -- and I wasn't even running.

I thought I'd wrap up a few things from last night before I head out for what's going to be a much lighter, easier day (but just as hot) since I was so swamped and didn't get to do much bloggin'.

We'll start with Guyer, and when you talk Guyer, it all starts with Joe Barb. Coaches and teammates call him the "face of Guyer track" and with his friendly, outgoing manner, he ain't a bad spokesperson to have.

What Barb did last night was nothing short of spectacular. His specialty (the 400) just so happens to be what is widely regarded as the most grueling race in track and field because it's a pretty long distance, but make no mistake, it's an all-out sprint.

Barb, who finished fifth last year as a sophomore, took the silver medal in the race and ran a personal best to go along with it. He also did something his daddy could never do, as Joe Barb III finished fifth at state as a junior and senior at LaMarque High School.

But what Barb did after that was even more amazing. The junior, whose long strides are a thing of beauty, anchored Guyer's 4x400 relay team just over an hour after his 400 was complete to a bronze medal. The heat and humidity last night was nearly unbearable, but Barb passed one guy on his leg and was inches from passing one or two more in what was a dynamite finish where the top four teams were within three one-hundredths of a second of each other.

As great as Barb was, senior Jake Witt's performance can't be left out of the equation. Witt, who's struggled at times in his athletic career at Guyer after moving from Florida before his junior year, might've been the most integral part of the relay's bronze medal team. Witt, the third leg, got the stick in sixth place. He was passed by one guy and was even with the last-place team on the second curve. But much like he did at regionals, Witt's strong kick proved to be stronger than just about anyone else's as he passed two guys down the stretch and got Barb the stick in fourth place. From then, it was inevitable that Guyer would finish in the medals, and they did. Now, a school with no previous medals in the state meet has two.

On to Argyle, as usual, the Eagles dominated the distance events, but this year was a little different. Because of an injury that forced her to miss nine weeks of the season, Kristie Krueger, who's signed with the University of Georgia, had to change up her itinerary this year, switching from the mile and two-mile to the mile and the 800. Having only run the 800 at district and regionals, the senior won the gold without much problem as she led the entire race. A couple of hours later though, Krueger's beat-up body took its toll on her. She said she considered dropping the 800 to focus on defending her title in the mile but she didn't and nearly unbearable heat took its toll.

It's hard to imagine being disappointed in second place, but when you're so used to winning, it becomes believable, and I could tell Krueger wasn't real happy with her silver medal. She led nearly the entire race and was passed with about 50 meters to go by archrival, training partner, and future SEC foe Kelsey Johnson of Iowa Park, who's going to Alabama.

Still, a gold and a silver is definitely nothing to be upset about, and Krueger has now medaled at state in every event she's finished, which totals seven, I believe.

On the boys side, Argyle senior Blake Woolums, who just started running competitively last year and won silver in the 3,200, took the gold in the two mile on Friday before finishing third later in the 1,600, behind junior teammate Stephen Curry. Curry, who had never beaten Woolums until the regional meet, used a newfound confidence to edge out his teammate again.

Boys track coach Steve Chancelor said his distance coach Bryan Beene has played a huge role in building the boys distance events to where it is now after Krueger hogged the spotlight for so long.

OK, I should probably get out of bed and get ready for another day in the searing heat. Talk to you soon...

The nightcap is about to get going

Mike A. Myers Stadium is filling up and in eight minutes the running events will start with the girls 4x100 relay, followed by the boys in order of 3A and 4A.

Denton's Amadi finishes fifth in triple jump

After going for a personal-best 46-9 ½ at the District 5-4A meet last month, Denton triple jumper Johnson Amadi had his sights set on great things for the state meet, but Friday ended in disappointment for the Denton junior after finishing fifth in the 4A boys triple jump with a leap of 45-7.

Amadi said after spending nearly half of the year training for Friday, he was simply worn out.

“I don’t know, I guess I’m just worn out from five or six months of track,” Amadi said. “I was better earlier in the season. I just kept on degressing, and I don’t know why.”

another year left, Amadi said he’s all set to start training for next year’s state meet where he’ll hopefully peak unlike this year.

“I’ve just got to work harder and get better,” he said. “I just need to try harder I guess, I don’t know. I worked on technique for a long time. I guess it just wasn’t my day. I just didn’t have that spring I usually do.”

A little look at the schedule

Tonight's schedule here is going to be a whirlwind to the umpth degree. Here's a little rundown of my chaotic night that will start here in about 3 1/2 hours.

6 p.m. - Ryan's Michael McLeod competes in the 4A boys high jump
6:10 - Argyle's 4x100 relay team gets to work
6:20 - Argyle distance legend Kristie Krueger takes a crack at the middle distance in the 800
6:30 - Argyle's Connor Hughey takes his crack at the 800
7:05 - Guyer's Brittany Shorter, the Wildcats' lone girl representative, runs the 100
7:35 - Sanger's 4x200 relay takes off
7:55 - Guyer's Joe Barb goes in the 400
8:15 - Argyle's Colby Oberle runs the 300 hurdles
8:45 - Krueger goes for the second time of the night in the 1,600, which she won last year
8:55 - Argyle's Blake Woolums and Stephen Curry go for the gold in the 1,600. Woolums won the 3,200 this morning.
9:15 - Guyer's mile relay competes in the final race of the evening, otherwise known as the "granddaddy of them all" around these parts.

Some 3A pole vault action

Both the boys and girls 3A pole vault just ended here in Austin and the Argyle Eagles barely missed out on the medals in both events.

Samuel Retzloff finished fourth with a 14-6, and Sanger's Trevor Hall cleared the same height, but had more misses to finish fifth.

On the girls side, Argyle's Jessica Bonfield finished in fourth, by way of more misses, with a height of 11 feet.

Bloggin' atcha live from Austin

I'm here at the UIL Track and Field State Championships at the University of Texas and due to a slight delay (about an hour) in getting my wireless password I'm just now getting you the great news for Argyle.

In the past, Kristie Krueger has ruled the distance events at Argyle High School, and while she still likely will, she has company in Blake Woolums.

Woolums took the 3A 3,200-meter run in a time of 9:23, besting his time from regionals by 17 seconds and winning by six over Llano's Cole Hoffman.

Woolums will be running in the 1,600 later in the afternoon and I'll talk to him then. Keep checking back for more updates. I'll be on fire all day today, literally. It's supposed to near 100. Fantastic.

4A Region I quarterfinals: Guyer vs. Joshua

Well, I'm sitting here at my friend's house in Pflugerville (home of TV's Dillon Panthers) and getting ready for the UIL state track meet that begins tomorrow where many area athletes will be competing.

Because of the trip, I'll unfortunately be missing Guyer's series with Joshua for the chance to advance to the regional semifinal. Guyer's made great strides this year -- having never won a playoff game before this year -- and frankly, no matter what happens this season will be viewed as a great success considering the team's youth (starts five freshmen and three sophomores).

Speaking of softball, I was a ringer last night in my buddy's beer league softball game and we played the best team in the league and beat them 16-10. Thing was, we scored all 16 of our runs in the third inning, thanks in large part to my bases loaded triple.

Now, back to the real softball.

I think this series will be a great one for a couple of reasons, most notably the matchup fans will see of a speedy, aggressive lineup against Guyer's defense which for the most part has been rock solid in the postseason.

After watching Game 2 of Joshua's series against Ryan, which Ryan won, I came away impressed mostly with the Lady Owls' speed and athleticism. Just about every girl on that team looked like she should be running the 100-meter dash this weekend in Austin. They were all stacked (big muscles) and could run, very fast, especially their third baseman. Trust me, you'll see.

They're a team that likes to slap hit and use their speed to make things happen on the base paths and will definitely make you pay for errors, which is what they did to Ryan. That's why Guyer's going to have to play lights out defense, which aside from one game in the Azle series and one inning in the Fort Worth Southwest series, they've done.

As for hitting, I really think Guyer will be able to hit Joshua's pitchers. From what I saw in that one game against Ryan, I wasn't impressed with Joshua's pitchers. Now, I didn't see Game 1, when they threw a gem against a stout Ryan lineup, but still, I think Guyer can hit them.

Guyer has seen the best pitcher they will face until the regional final with Aledo's Whitney Canion. The Lady Wildcats managed to beat Azle and pitcher Sarah Mendez, who was great. From what I saw, Joshua's pitchers are good, but not great.

As for the series, I see it definitely going three games and I really think it's going to be a toss-up as for who wins. If Kylee Crosek pitches like she has this postseason, she's going to be tough to beat. I'll go with a Guyer win in three games.

Cleburne presents challenge

Ryan is facing Cleburne again in the area round of the playoffs. Last year the Raiders disposed of Cleburne in three games and the Yellow Jackets have plenty of ways to hurt opponents in 2008.

First of all, Cleburne has a wealth of left-handed pitchers, something that's even harder to find at the high school level than it is elsewhere. Shane Ingram is 10-2 on the year and will likely face Curtis Petersen in Game 1.

Catcher Colby Braddock is one of the best in the area and will challenge Ryan's small ball style of play by attack base runners that try to steal second. He's batting .417 in addition to his defensive abilities.

The good news for Ryan is that the Yellow Jackets make a lot of errors. They managed to sneak by Fort Worth South Hills last weekend despite committing five errors in Game 2. The Raiders have no trouble putting the ball in play. It could get ugly if Cleburne makes too many mistakes.

I'm predicting a Raider win, if I can go that far out on a limb there.

Not great news for Guyer softball, but not as bad as feared

The Guyer softball team suffered a serious injury on Monday in a friendly game of "backwards softball", the Lady Wildcats' Monday ritual when they play with their opposite hands and bat opposite of what is natural to them.

Guyer assistant coach Trey Shaw, who might've taught Amber Gonzales a thing or two about diving for balls, apparently goes all out in every practice and plays like he's trying to win a game....in practice.

So Shaw dove for a ball and landed awkwardly on his wrist, snapping it in two. Head coach Keith Medford told me he heard the bone snap and Shaw just got up and calmly said "It's gone, I'm out," and went on to the hospital.

Medford's take on the situation, "At least it was him and not one of the girls." Of course, it was in a joking manner, but it would be disastrous if it were Gonzales and not Shaw considering the Lady Wildcats start their regional quarterfinal best-of-three series against Joshua, which knocked off Ryan, on Thursday night at 7:30 p.m. at Keller Central.

Not great news for Guyer football, but not as bad as feared

As I first reported on this here blog last Thursday, Guyer's offensive tackle Kyle Clark, who committed to Texas Tech two weeks ago, was injured during spring practice.

Head coach John Walsh had told me he walked off the field without much problem, but it was still clear that Walsh was a little shaken and nervous.

Now he can exhale because Clark's injury is pretty minor by football standards. He just had some torn miniscus cartilage in his knee, which isn't that big of a deal. Walsh won't take any chances -- Clark's out for the spring -- but of all the players Guyer has, Clark's probably on the list of guys who didn't need spring ball as much as some of his teammates.

Ryan didn't choke, just got beat

It's easy to say the Ryan Lady Raiders choked and didn't live up to the lofty expectations that come with having the majority of a team back that made the state title game the year before.

Frankly, Ryan just got beat. Watch out, Guyer. You're going to have your hands full with the Lady Owls.

Joshua was able to get enough hits off Brysten Luster and Tara Tague. It is one of the best base-running teams I've ever seen. And pitcher Kayci Wilson was simply heroic, pitching all but three innings of the three-game series and shutting down one of the hottest offensive teams in the state in games 1 and 3.

You can point the finger at the lackluster offensive performance that cost Ryan Game 3 as the reason why the Lady Raiders aren't getting ready for Guyer, but it all goes back to Ryan's loss in Game 1.

I don't think the Lady Raiders showed up for that one. Ryan losing to any team 7-0 is simply shocking. Even in losses to some of the best teams in the state no matter what class they were in, Ryan was never blown out of a game like that.

To do it in their first playoff game of the year is unfortunate timing for the Lady Raiders. Rumblings around the area suggested Ryan would have its hands full with Joshua. Play well and Ryan would win was what I was told.

Obviously, Ryan didn't have its best game in any of the three games. Without Whitney's Haynes' clutch 3 RBI double, the Lady Raiders wouldn't have even pushed it to Game 3. Why the Lady Raiders didn't have their best is anyone's guess. As many coaches have told me, getting teenagers to stay focused for a whole season is the toughest part of the job.

The worst interviews I have to do in my job is after a team is eliminated. Interviewing a team that was favored to go the distance that just lost in the area round is a whole other animal. Aimee Foutch did her best to hide her disappointment, but I know this one is going to sting for Ryan for a long time.

Still, Ryan has a lot to be proud of. Winning back-to-back district titles in 5-4A isn't easy. Going undefeated in district play in both years is remarkable. Unfortunately it ended the way it did.

Guyer moves on

The Lady Wildcats just beat Southwest 8-2 to win Game 2 and the area round series to advance to the regional quarterfinal to meet the winner of today's Ryan-Joshua matchup.

Crosek struck out the final batter looking for her fifth K of the day but the sophomore only gave up two hits on the day and no earned runs.

I'm heading down to the field, more to come later...

That should do it

Guyer just put three more runs in the bottom of the sixth on three more Southwest errors, giving the Lady Raiders seven on the day.

The highlight was when Amber Gonzales hit a little slap over the shortstop's head into shallow left. The left fielder overthrew second base, sending Gonzales to third and the right fielder overthrew home, allowing Gonzales to make the round-tripper. She also scored Aloyo on the hit.

This is trouble

Southwest second baseman Miranda Urbanski just took a throw from shortstop on an attempted double play on a grounder from Jenice Aloyo. The ball apparently hit Urbanski's wrist or something and went into the outfield, allowing pinch runner Alyssa Keim to score from first base. It looks like Urbanski will stay in, but she doesn't really have a choice because Southwest doesn't have any more players.

Guyer has a sloppy inning

The Lady Raiders' play is rubbing off on Guyer as the Lady Wildcats just gave up two unearned runs on no hits, a walk and two errors. Guyer has a 5-2 lead going to the bottom of the sixth.

Heading to the sixth

Guyer still holds a 5-0 lead and I guess my prediction of a run-rule win is foiled again. It's the second and third time I've ever been wrong, seriously, like ever.

The Lady Raiders have 8-9-1 coming up to bat but at this point, they're finding it near impossible to touch Crosek no matter who's at the plate.

Crosek's perfect game over

Crosek struck out Southwest's first two batters of the fifth inning looking as she owned the outside corner.

Then, shortstop Amber Gonzales, who's made all kinds of spectacular plays this season laid out for a short pop-up between Crosek and second base and the ball went in and out of the glove. Come on Amber, that's a routine play for you! Not really, obviously it was a hit, not an error and the Lady Raiders are no longer hitless. I don't really think it will ultimately matter.

We have a timeout

Things are getting uglier and uglier for Southwest as Crosek just hit a sharp grounder in the Southwest shortstop's five-hole and into left center field to score Aloyo. That's four Es on the Lady Raiders, score Guyer 5, Southwest 0.

Injury timeout

Guyer's No. 9 hitter Jenice Aloyo just hit the furthest ball I've ever seen her hit about 200 feet to center field where Southwest center fielder Carly Fulbright was camped under it. Only problem was it plopped down on her forehead and rolled to the wall, putting Aloyo on second base and leaving Southwest in a predicament considering the Lady Raiders have just one sub. That was their third error of the game and it could be costly with Crosek at the plate and a runner on second.

The rout is on

Kylee Crosek got things started in the first inning with a walk fighting off 10 pitches in the at-bat to get on base and steal second before Amber Gonzales sacrifice bunted her to third base.

A deep Layne Greenlee fly to left scored Crosek and then Southwest lost it.

Caitlin Christopher hit a deep drive to left that was dropped by the Southwest left fielder, putting the freshman catcher on second base. Amanda Wells and Kayla Mellinger then followed up with RBI singles to give the Lady Wildcats a three-run third and a 4-0 lead.

Mellinger just made a spectacular play on a deep drive to center field. The freshman retreated and caught the ball over her shoulder with an outstretched arm, and before I can even finish this post about Guyer's half of the inning, Crosek sits down the side in order again. She's now perfect through four innings.

Crosek's looking good

The sophomore pitcher is perfect through three innings, retiring Southwest's order in order once through. We'll see if the Lady Raiders can make some adjustments on their second trip through the lineup.

Quick at-bat for Guyer

Southwest pitcher Kayla Castillo needed just six innings to retire Guyer in the second, and she even had a runner reach base when Maegan Anderson reached on an error. Guyer's three other batters in the inning hit grounders on the first pitch.

Amber Gonzales comes through again

The freshman shortstop, who's quite a defensive sensation and had the play of the week on Sunday's WFAA High School Sports Special, just had another great catch behind second base. This one wasn't of the diving variety -- rather ho-hum for her, I suppose -- but it was a full-out sprinting catch that she had to reach pretty far for.

Crosek is perfect through two innings. Going to the bottom of the second with Mellinger, Anderson and Vochoska up to the plate.

Guyer jumps out to another quick lead

After one inning Guyer has a 1-0 lead after a Layne Greenlee double scored Amber Gonzales. The Lady Wildcats really stroked Southwest pitcher Kayla Castillo in that inning with a lot of hard-hit balls.

Quick three up, three down

Crosek just retired the side in order to start the game, now Guyer comes up in the bottom of the first with Crosek, Gonzales and Greenlee.

On a side note...does anyone else find it a bit humorous that Freddy Mercury is the guy that wrote the ultimate sports pump-up song "We Will Rock You". Just a little food for thought... What a great song though.

Getting ready for Game 2

We're about 15 minutes from start time here at Boswell High School and I'm here in the luxurious press box at Pioneer Field.

I've been asked about my prediction I made last night on the blog about a run-rule win for Guyer in this game a few times already and I'm sticking with my guns on this one. If the Lady Wildcats pitch and play defense like they did against Azle, it will happen.

Guyer has decided to stick with the exact same lineup as last night:

1 - Kylee Crosek - P (2-4, R, 3 SBs last night)
2 - Amber Gonzales - SS (2-4, 2 R, 2 SBs, RBI)
3 - Layne Greenlee - RF (1-3, R, walk, RBI)
4 - Caitlin Christopher - C (3-4, R, 2 RBIs)
5 - Amanda Wells - LF (1-4)
6 - Kayla Mellinger - CF (0-1, sac bunt, walk)
7 - Maegan Anderson - 3B (0-2, walk)
8 - Lindsay Vochoska - 1B (0-3, reached on error)
9 - Jenice Aloyo - 2B (0-3)

What a surprise...

A freshman stepped up huge for the Lady Wildcats tonight in their 6-2 series-opening win over Fort Worth Southwest. Why's it a surprise? Well, it's not -- it's called sarcasm, which is something I excel in.

Guyer starts five freshman, so by odds alone, there's a pretty good chance one of them will play a key role in every game, and today was no different. Catcher Caitlin Christopher got moved back up the clean-up spot after hitting in the 5 hole in recent weeks.

Not that it's a big move, but Guyer coach Keith Medford told me she had been seeing the ball really well and hitting like crazy this week in practice and the move paid off. Christopher's two-run triple in the second inning put Guyer out to 3-0 lead en route to the victory. It was a nice stroke that probably would've hit the wall at Guyer's park, but Boswell vast field (225 all the way around) swallowed it whole.
