Daniel Premenko kicked a 40-yard field goal in overtime, as Denton held off Western Hills in its season opener in Fort Worth
Guyer was trailing by three points at the half, but gave up a quick 21 points in the third quarter, all at the hands of Red Oak's junior tailback Nic Boyd.
The Broncos and Western Hills Cougars will play extra football tonight in Fort Worth. The game is still tied at 21.
Red Oak went up 34-5 with five minutes left and proceeded to attempt an onsides kick. Interesting...
Red Oak's second stringers are in the game, and the Hawks just got on the board again to take a 34-5 lead with 5:08 remaining. Guyer will have to wait for its first varsity win.
Van Alstyne added to its lead lead at the 8:43 mark of the fourth quarter with a touchdown pass to take a 44-9 lead
The second half started badly for Denton, when Western Hills returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown. Then it got worse, when the Cougars returned an interception for another score. Now the game is tied at 21, early in the fourth quarter, likely setting up for a nail-biter of a finish.
Lake Dallas is holding on to its lead against scrappy Terrell. The Falcons have a 10-6 advantage heading into the fourth quarter.
Van Alstyne used a pair of long passes, one to set up a seven-yard touchdown throw as Van Alstyne .extended its lead over Paradise to 37-9 with 3:37 left in the third quarter
Nic Boyd just continued his stellar night by catching a screen pass and scampering untouched for 78 yards down the left sideline for his fourth touchdown of the night. Red Oak now leads 27-3 at the end of the third quarter.
Paradise took the second half kickoff and marched 69 yards to score with 8:45 left in the third quarter to cut into Van Alstyne's 30-9 lead.
After another Guyer three-and-out, helped by a 20-yard loss on a snap through quarterback Jake Witt's legs, Red Oak took a 20-3 lead on a 31-yard touchdown trot from Boyd, who's proven Guyer head coach John Walsh right when he said he was dangerous once he got past the front seven.
There's an alarm going off in the press box. I think it's a faulty fire alarm, at least I hope.
Red Oak just needed six plays to get on the board again after forcing a Guyer three-and-out to open the second half. Nic Boyd did the damage again on a draw play, but the highlight of the drive came on quarterback Kevin Pruett's zone read run when he laid a wicked stiff arm on a Guyer linebacker for a 12-yard run and a first down. Score: 13-3, Red Oak with 8:18 remaining in the third quarter.
So far, there's not much going on at Billy Goodloe Stadium in Red Oak. The Hawks lead 6-3 at the half, but neither team has punted. Go figure...
Lake Dallas 10, Terrell 0 (halftime)
Fort Worth Nolan 21, Liberty Christian 7
Pilot Point 6, St. Mark's 0
Van Alstyne kicks a 27-yard field goal with 1:50 left in the first half to take a 30-2 lead over Paradise.
Moments later Van Alstyne recovered a Paradise fumble but couldn't convert it into points and went to the dressing room at halfdtime with a 30-2 lead.
Denton has been impressive in the first half of its season opener in Fort Worth, taking a 14-0 halftime lead over Western Hills. Lance Lorne and George Tovar each have touchdown runs for the Broncos.
Guyer, on the other hand, just got on the board with a 32-yard field goal by kicker Sam Alspach. Score: Red Oak 6, Guyer 3 with 2:57 remaining in the first half.
The Paradise defense sacked the Van Alstyne for a safety to cut the Van Alsyne lead to 20-2 but Van Alstyne responded moments later by driving 65-yards to score and take a 27-2 lead with 4:42 left in the first half.
Lake Dallas is on the board early in its game at Terrell. Zach Waggoner has scored on a 1-yard run to give the Falcons a 7-0 lead after the first quarter.
Red Oak must not have any soccer players. They've passed up an extra point for a failed swinging gate and now have gone for two fourth downs, converting one on Red Oak's first quarter toudchown and failing on the other attempt just now...Guyer ball.
Van Alstyne recovered a Paradise fumble on a kickoff return and quicky scored with 4:31 remaining in the first quarter to take a 20-0 lead.
Van Alstyne used a 35-yard touchdown pass to score on its second possession of the night to take a 14-0 lead over Paradise with 5:12 left in the first quarter.
Red Oak just took a 6-0 lead on Guyer on a 13-play drive and didn't run once out of its spread offense. The Hawks attemped the "swinging gate" on the extra point and failed. Most importantly, the drive took 8:50 off the clock. Guyer's about to have its first offensive drive of the season.
The Van Alstyne Panthers drove 70-yards on their first possession of the game and scored with 7:56 left in the first quarter to take a 7-0 lead.
It will be the clash of a pair of Panthers tonight at C.H. Collins Athletic Complex when the Paradise Panthers meet the Van Alstyne Panthers at 7:30. This is the season opener for both squads.
Here's the video of Michael Carter from 1979 at Dallas Jefferson High School. His record shot put, 81 feet, 3 inches, beat the previous record by more than 10 feet. It still stands today. He went on to star in football and track at SMU before winning the silver medal in the 1984 Olympics and starring at nose tackle for the San Francisco 49ers. He went to three Pro Bowls.
His son, also named Michael, will be clogging up the middle for Red Oak tonight against Guyer. He weighs 330 pounds. It should be interesting.
The Gunter Tigers had to hold off a Boyd Yellowjacket march inside the Gunter 20 before stopping Boyd to secure a 21-20 victory at C.H. Collins Athletic Complex Thursday night.
Gunter put together a time consuming 65-yard drive in the closing minutes of the fourth quarter and scored with 2:07 remaining and then converted the two-point conversion to take a 21-20 lead over the Boyd Yellowjackets.
The Yellowjackets scored on a 41-yard touchdown pass but missed the extra point try but increased their lead over Gunter, 20-13 with 3:23 left in the third quarter
Gunter fumbled on the second play of the half and Boyd took advantage, driving in for a touchdown and then scoring on a two-point conversion to take a 14-13 lead with 8:25 left in the third.
Gunter recovered a fumble and drove to the Boyd 30 in the final minute for the half but the drive stalled and Gunter took a 13-6 lead into the lockerroom at the half.
Gunter takes just over three minutes to drive 80 yards and scored with 1:01 left in the second quarter to take a 13-6 lead over Boyd.
The Boyd Yellowjackets took the kickoff after Gunter's score and drove the length of the field and scored but missed the extra point and trail 7-6 with 4:11 left in the second quarter.
Gunter scores with 8:44 left in the second quarter to take a 7-0 lead over the Boyd Yellowjackets.
Football season officially opens at Denton ISD's C.H. Collins Athletic Complex Thursday night when the Boyd Yellowjackets meet the Gunter Tigers at 7:30 p.m. On Friday night, the Paradise Panthers face the Van Alstyne Panthers at 7:30 p.m. at Collins.
The Denton Broncos will open it's 2007 home schedule on Thursday, Sept. 6 when they host McKinney North. On Friday, Sept. 7, the Ryan Raiders open their home schedule when they host Colleyville Heritage.
With 1:10 remaining, Lake Dallas' Ashton Allen picked off a pass that bounced up off a Denton receiver's facemask and took it 42 yards to the house to cap off the scoring. The real thing starts next week for both teams. Denton travels to Fort Worth Western Hills, and Lake Dallas heads to Terrell, both games are at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
Lake Dallas starting defensive linemen Moses Lopez and Isaac Tauaefa are having fun on the sideline. Lopez, pretending to be a quarterback, is practicing his handoffs to the 260-pound "running back." Look out, District 9-4A.
Granted, it was against Lake Dallas' second-team defense, but Denton just scored again on a 10-play drive on another Stewart keeper to pull within a touchdown. Within two minutes, Lake Dallas has just scored again on another scoring drive led by Franklin. I'm about to take back my joking statement about something brewing in Lake Dallas.
The Broncos put together a 14-play drive and quarterback Spencer Stewart plunged in from a yard out to put Denton on the board with just over two minutes remaining in the half. At halftime, Lake Dallas leads 21-7. We'll see how long starters play in the second half. At least there's no band to sit through.
OK, not really, but sophomore backup QB James Franklin just entered the scrimmage against Denton in the second quarter and immediately busted a 20-yard run on a zone read play. Franklin, the Falcons' starting tight end has drawn high praise from LD coaches throughout camp.
Starter Zach Waggoner threw for two touchdown passes in the first quarter and had just as many sure TDs dropped by wide open receivers. His job's safe, and Franklin will be one of a few deadly targets for the 6-4 senior. Lake Dallas leads 21-0 with three minutes left in the first half, but Denton is driving.
Aubrey head football coach Daryl Hellman said one reason for his team's historic success last year was because of a lack of injuries throughout the season.
A week into fall practice, the picture isn't as friendly for Hellman.
At Monday's practice, Hellman talked about a list of "minor injuries" but there was one that wasn't so minor.
Senior Buck Russell, an all-state tight end and the Chaps' top receiver from a year ago, was on the sidelines in shorts and a T-shirt and his left arm in a sling after suffering a hyperextended left elbow. Hellman said Russell should be ready for the season opener against Nocona on Aug. 31, but he likely won't see much practice time before then.
