Ponder, Krum, Aubrey to play for final playoff spot

The race for the final playoff spot in District 13-2A baseball couldn’t be decided in the regular season as Krum, Ponder and Aubrey finished in a three-way tie for third, setting up Monday’s mini-tournament to decide who advances to the post season.
Aubrey and Krum will play at 4:30 p.m. Monday at Guyer for the right to play Ponder at 8 p.m. to decide the third spot.
Ponder gets the bye because it had a better record in games between the three schools. Ponder gained the advantage by sweeping Krum while splitting with Aubrey. Krum and Aubrey split. All three finished 6-8 in district play.
Aubrey beat the odds with a late-season charge to move into a tie for third, something the team did in the playoffs last year – win games with late rallies. That may give the Chaps the edge over Krum.

Ryan loss changes stakes in finale for Broncos

The drama of Denton’s regular season finale against Ryan on Friday lost a bit of its luster after Ryan lost on Tuesday.
The winner of Friday’s game would have taken the district title, but now only Denton can claim the crown with a win. A Ryan win would make the two teams co-champions and they’d likely play a district playoff to see who gets the bye.
Despite being on the road, Denton may have the advantage in the tilt as it will start ace Miles Mulkey. Denton is undefeated in district play when Mulkey starts, and the Broncos' absurdly potent batting order can keep them in the game even if Mulkey struggles.

Ryan's Kraft headed for SMU

Ryan senior standout golfer Kelly Kraft originally signed with UNT this past fall. However, his paperwork never went through with the school, so his letter was not valid. Unfortunately for the Mean Green, Kraft got calls from a couple more schools and, on Wednesday, Kraft signed with SMU.
Kraft and the Radiers are competing at the Class 4A Region I tournament Monday-Tuesday in San Angelo.

Moss will be in Denton for draft

Former Ryan standout defensive end Jarvis Moss will be in Denton one week from Saturday when his name is called, probably some time in the first round of the NFL draft in New York City.
Moss, who played at the University of Florida, will be at a private, invitation-only party at Hooligan’s, on the Square, for the draft, which begins at 11 a.m. on April 28.
Moss is projected by nearly every mock draft to be selected in the first round of the draft. He will become the first former Raider to ever be drafted to play in the NFL.

Denton-Ryan softball game moved up

The Denton-Ryan softball game scheduled for 6:30 p.m. today has been moved up to 5 p.m. at DHS because of bad weather rolling in. Ryan can secure no worse than a share of the District 5-4A title with a win.

Another non-district no-go for Raiders

For the second Saturday in three weeks, Ryan's baseball team had a non-district Saturday afternoon game cancelled because of bad weather on Friday night. The Raiders were scheduled to host Carrollton Newman Smith on Saturday, March 31, but their district game against Wichita Falls Rider scheduled for the night before was postponed and bumped to Saturday. The Saturday game was also rained out, forcing Ryan and Rider to play on Monday.
Ryan was set to host Sherman tonight and Colleyville Heritage in a non-district game on Saturday. Because of rain in the area, however, the Sherman game will now be played at 3 p.m. Saturday at Ryan Baseball Field.

Pitch around Crosek

Maybe it's me, and Guyer softball coach Keith Medford is going to kill me for writting this, but barring two-outs in the seventh inning of a tie ball game with the bases loaded, I would never pitch to Guyer freshman Kylee Crosek. I'd walk her.

She's batting .500 and change and nobody else on the Lady Wildcats goes over .380. It's simple math that Denton found out the hard way when Crosek blasted a three-run inside the park home run on Thursday.

Injury can't keep Guyer's Buller off leaderboard

Guyer junior midfielder Stefani Buller missed all but one district game due to a torn anterior cruciate ligament, but she still finished the season tied for the team lead in goals with 15.
Sophomore midfielder Tatum Howard also scored 15, while also dishing out a team-leading 17 assists, and freshman striker Kelsey Hodges came up one short with 14 goals.

No love for local teams

Neither the Texas High School Baseball Coaches polls nor the Texas Girls Coaches Association poll ranks any Denton area team. What's the deal?
In softball, Ponder is 17-2-1, and Aubrey is 21-2, and neither of them deserve consideration in a Class 2A top 20? Sanger at 17-5 isn't a stretch for the Class 3A top 20 either.

Lady Raiders smacking the ball around

In addition to getting stellar pitching this season from both Brysten Luster (14-3) and Tara Tague (8-2), Ryan is also taking care of business with the bats. Heading into Friday's game at Denton, the Lady Raiders have six starters hitting better than .300. Outfielder Jeana Keyes is leading the way with a .460 average, while first baseman Shay Ristau is hitting .429 with a team-high 21 RBI. Whitney Haynes has 20 RBI. Ryan (22-5) has already wrapped up a playoff berth.

Midfielders went unsung

It was disappointing to see the Denton Bronco soccer team take such an early exit from the playoffs. The team will graduate an amazing senior class that featured defenders Joey Diebold, Jason Replogle and Aaron Traurig, keeper Michael Ross and forward Jose Orta -- the Broncos' second-leading scorer.
But instrumental in making the Broncos one of the area's top defensive teams with a .35 goals against average was the midfield trio of Martin Madsen, Gerado Lopez and Thomas Slane.
Replogle told me Madsen's play improved dramatically and made the defenders' job easier. In a year with many injuries, head coach Scott Heffley was never more worried than when he had to move Lopez from the midfield to the keeper when Ross was out for two games with a seperated shoulder.

Ryan stays red hot

After warpping up a playoff berth on Thursday night because of Guyer's win over Denton, Ryan continued to plow through District 5-4A opponents on Friday night with a 10-0 win over Wichita Falls Rider.
Through nine district games, Ryan has outscored its opponents by a combined total of 72-7 and has yet to surrender more than two runs to a district opponent.
The Lady Raiders are three wins away from going undefeated in district. If Ryan can beat Denton, Guyer and Sherman for a second time, it will finish 12-0 in district play.

Friday should be big night at Tina Minke Field

Ryan's softball team is hoping to celebrate its first playoff berth since 1996 when it's all said and done on Friday night against Wichita Falls Rider at Tina Minke Field.
The Lady Raiders (21-5, 8-0) will also be looking to break the record for most wins in a season in program history and for their 10th consecutive win. Ryan can make all of those things happen by beating Rider for the second time this season. Ryan won, 4-1, over Rider on March 13.
First pitch is slated for 6:30 p.m.

The Preston Springer Show

Denton's Preston Springer came up big for the Broncos once again on Tuesday night with a super-clutch three-run dinger in the sixth inning to help his team rally for a 6-2 win over Ryan and take sole possession of first place in the 5-4A standings, giving the Broncos the inside track to the district title with six games left. Springer has 10 homers this season, inlcuding three game-winners.
"It's great to maintain the district lead," Springer said. "Playing against a cross-town rival it's big to come up like that and do some damage. I look forward to the second half of district. If we keep playing like we are, we'll be successful and have a chance at first in district."

Lady Raiders can clinch tonight

The Ryan Lady Raider softball team can wrap up its first playoff berth since 1996 tonight with a win over Denison, coupled with a Wichita Falls Rider victory over Denton. Ryan would be 8-0 in District 5-4A play with a win, while both Denison and Denton would both be 3-5 with a loss with just four games remaining in the regular season. The top three teams in each district earn spots in the postseason. Ryan (20-5) can also equal the program record for wins in a season by beating Denison. Pretty impressive stuff considering four years ago the Lady Raiders went 1-19.
